Rainy days

It has been raining solidly for 4 days. The little hint of summer that we had here in Sydney last week has been convincingly washed away. In some ways this makes me very nervous - our wedding reception is outdoors - and it also makes me sad because it means the dahlia season for Sydney will be delayed, and dahlias were my number one choice for wedding flowers (which I am doing myself).

However, I am trying to find a positive outlook on all this rain, and I didn't have to look very far:

My zucchini plants are going absolutely beserk. Would you believe I paid $2 for a tiny punnet of seedlings from Bunnings two weeks ago?

Hello, delicious zucchini flower. You will soon be stuffed with fetta and fried, and on my plate for dinner.

Maybe the rain can be forgiven just this once.

Cushion project

We have an area at our upcoming wedding reception that needs some colour. It is a plain space, with white couches and a couple of coffee tables. I saw the photo above months ago (and I don't have a credit for it, sorry!) and was really inspired by the colours and textures used in this little collection of cushions.

Off I went to IKEA and, 2 hours and a $1 hotdog later, I emerged with a stash of 8 cushion inserts ($1.99 each! You can't beat that!) and a mission to make a lounge area full of colour.

We don't really have a colour scheme. We have Mexican influenced decorations, which includes a bold emerald green, magenta, midnight blue and royal purple. I have decided to make cushions in solid colours using some interesting textural techniques, like the ones above. I particularly like the woven yellow and the circular pale blue with the pleats coming to the centre. I can't quite work out what's going on with the circular pink one, but it looks cool too.

Oh HI! It's me, Emma! I'm back and I do apologise for the silence. What have I been doing?

Well, planning a wedding. I get married in 3 weeks, you guys. THREE WEEKS!! That's pretty soon.

Also, mucking around in the kitchen.

So what's happening with NeverEver? Why did I abandon it for so long? Why so quiet? To be honest, I felt a bit over it. I was starting to not enjoy making all my handmade cuties on demand. I like to make things at my own pace sometimes, you know? And I found that I was feeling resentful every time a sale came through, instead of jumping off my chair with joy as I did when I first started making sales. I needed a little break, to step away from Etsy, and I am glad I did.

But now (and it does seem a strange time to feel this, in the middle of crazy wedding stuff and just before Christmas), I do feel like I would like to jump back in again - with a bit of a twist. I am going to sell mainly one-off pieces out of gorgeous fabrics from my stash. Classic denim and my bib range will stay, but everything else will be an as-I-feel-like-it production line. I have a huge exciting cupboard overflowing with bits and pieces, and I can't wait to use them.

How to Make a Patchwork Baby Quilt: Part Two

Last week I wrote half a how-to on making a patchwork baby quilt. Today I am going to write the rest, so you can finish off your creation, stand back, admire it, and wait for all the compliments.
We left off last week after cutting out all our squares, working out colour placement, and having all our measurements (with seam allowances!) correct and ready to go. Now it's time to sew them all together.
Do one row at a time, pinning square to square with the right sides together, until you have a long line of squares. Repeat for all your other rows. Press open the seams as you go. The aim is to get these squares sitting as flat as possible.

When you have done all your rows, move on to the columns. Pin the rows together at the join in the seam, making sure you keep the seam allowances opened out flat, like this:

Once you have pinned all the way down the column, stitch it together carefully, again being aware of the open seam allowances and keeping them flat.

Repeat for the remaining columns. When you have done them all, press the seam allowances open and flat again, and then press the whole thing so everything is lying the right way.

Cut your border fabric pieces. I decided to have the top and bottom horizontal pieces go right to the edge, and the verticals to meet the top and bottom border. Make sure you are quite careful with measurements here. Allow seam allowance for one side only, as the other edge will be bound with bias tape.

Stitch your border pieces on, and again press the seams open and flat.
Now we are going to mount the backing fabric onto the batting. Make sure they are of the same measurement, and Lay your batting out completely flat. Lay the backing fabric on top, and then loosely hand stitch a tacking stitch through both layers in wide diagonal lines. This will assist you when it comes to sewing the patchworked layer on: if you don't do it, you will find that the backing fabric will move around, bunch up, and look generally ugly.

Now, turn your backing and batting piece over so the batting is up. Lay your patchworked piece on top, right side up. It will look too small. Be assured that it is NOT, it just needs a bit of cajoling. Stitching together so many squares has made the fabric tighter, and we need to give it a bit of a stretch out. This is good, though: if it were loose, the fabric would bunch up when you sew it, and that is a nightmare you don't want to have.

This is where you will need a LOT of pins. You need to pin every side of every square. Start with the edge, where the bias tape will go, gently pulling and manipulating the patchworking so the fabric gives a little and meets the edge. It's ok if it is a few mm off. You can trim when you are finished.
Work your way in from the edge, pinning each square. Make sure your lines stay straight and don't get warped by your fabric manipulation.

This is what you want it to look like all pinned.

Ok - now you are ready to sew all the layers together. Starting from the middle, ditch stitch along all rows and columns. This is stitching in the seam, so your work will be almost invisible.

Sew around the very edge of the quilt. This stitching line will be hidden by bias tape. Trim any excess batting or backing fabric, so you have a neat straight edge.
Pin your bias tape evenly, half underneath and half on top. If you are worried about the underneath slipping whilst stitching, you could hand tack this part; but I was in a bit of a rush and so just pinned it quite heavily.

Stitch 1mm out from the inside edge of the bias tape, enclosing the three layers in a bias tape sandwich. You can mitre the corners if you like, as I did, or you can fold them another way.

Give the quilt a really good press, especially the bias tape edge.

You are finished! What do you think? I gave mine to my friend last weekend for her baby shower and she loved it. Nothing like a handmade gift!

How to make a Patchwork Baby Quilt: Part One

I'm nearly finished the patchwork quilt that I am making for my friend's baby shower this weekend. I have never quilted before, and never made a patchwork, even though I had good intentions a few months ago. But I thoroughly enjoyed making it, and not being a quilter, I thought I would write a little how-to for other people who may think that patchwork is beyond them, or that it will take an age. It isn't, and it doesn't!

I don't have a fancy sewing machine, or a special rotary cutter, or a mat with measurements for lining up squares. None of that! I made up my instructions as I went along. Easy. So here we go!

First, decide on your measurements. I wanted a quilt suitable for the pram, car seat, or the floor, not a cot size (which is considerably bigger). I ended up with the strange measurement of 90cm x 66cm (a result of the width of the batting... see below).
You will need:

Scissors
Pins (a lot)
Needle and thread
Pencil
Ruler
70cm of backing fabric
20cm of border fabric
20cm each of 4 different pattern fabrics
3.5 metres of 3cm wide bias binding
?cm of Batting (the warm middle filler). There are a million different widths and varieties available. I chose one that was 100% needled cotton, which means it won't bunch up in the wash. The amount you buy needs to be big enough to cut your quilt size, obviously, but I bought enough for two layers as I wanted it to be snuggly for winter.

Now, to choose your fabrics. I had a few restrictions, because it is a quilt for an as yet unborn child, and I don't know if it is a boy or a girl. So neutral colours were the go. I also decided to use 100% cotton fabrics only. I chose a white with a bunny pattern, a mint greeny-blue polka dot, a lemon and white abstract pattern, and a flocked white spot. I chose a lemon yellow homespun for the border, and white homespun for the back, with white bias binding for the edge.

Next, draw your pattern. Don't be afraid - this is simply a rough sketch so you can work out your measurements and colour placement. Behold, the technical drawing:

I worked out that for a 90 x 66 quilt, I would do 8cm squares. 7 columns and 10 rows, plus a 5cm border. Then I coloured the squares in to make sure that they looked ok, and to work out how many to cut. I needed 19 bunnies, 19 white spots, 16 blue dots and 16 lemon patterns.

*Important: at this point, before you start drawing your squares, work out your seam allowances. I decided to do 5mm for two reasons: it is the width of my sewing machine foot, and it also made it a round 1cm to add to my 8cm squares, making them 9cm cut.

Wash and tumble dry your fabrics to pre-shrink them (nothing worse than a puckering quilt after the first wash). Then give them a good press and rule the grid squares on the wrong side of the fabric, using a square ruler and a pencil. Cut them out. This part needs to be done with high precision, otherwise you will be kicking yourself later when your squares don't line up and your quilt top is too small for the batting.

On the batting, lay out your squares in your decided pattern.

At this point I had a bit of a dilemma. The minty blue green was actually just blue.

I tried turning it wrong side up, I cursed Spotlight for their misleading neon lights, I phoned my Mum to ask her opinion, but there was no escaping the fact that it was Blue. And since blue is not a neutral colour, I scrapped it and bought a little lemon yellow polka dot instead. Happy days.

After all this work, I set the quilt aside for a day or so because I needed a little break. So I will leave the post here for now, but stay tuned for Part Two, where we will sew, pin, iron, and sew some more until we are FINISHED!

Hello! I have been missing in action for such a long time! I have been overseas with my work, and I have also been busy planning my wedding.

But it's time to get back into the swing of things. I have a very dear friend who is having a baby in July, and next weekend is her baby shower. I am thinking of making her a quilt for the cot or the floor, and because she doesn't know if it's a boy or a girl, I am going to do it in all white fabrics with different textures and patterns.

I went searching for some inspiration and found these lovelies:

This gorgeous girly quilt is from Quiltville. I love the simple square design which makes the fabric the feature. I also like the wavy stitching to hold the batting in place.

This sweet one from The Pink Palace is the kind of texture variation I have in mind:

And this lovely simple quilt from Sweetiebug is a great example of using neutral colours to make it safe to use for a boy or a girl! I also like the border around the edge, the bias finish is great.

Now to the fun part: going to the fabric shop. I'll keep you updated with my progress.

A feast to bring in 2011

Good day! How are you liking 2011 so far? I think it is quite good. Back to work tomorrow so my views may change, however, for now, I thought I would share my NYE feast.

You may recall the menu. Well, I started to prepare in the morning, making our desserts which were both cold. The chocolate mousse was first. Straight into the fridge!

Then, I made the Green Apple Granita. It was such a simple recipe. I don't have an icecream maker, so I simply froze the mixture in icecube trays and then whizzed them with my hand-held kitchen whizz. Here are the apples simmering in the sugar and juice.

Cold things done, I started on the first dish on the menu, the Tomato Soup. I made it from a recipe in the book Movida Rustica, a Spanish cookbook from the Melbourne restaurant. J's Dad gave it to me for Christmas last year. The soup needed to simmer for quite a while on the stove so I got it going early. Please note my blatant exhibitionism of my new kitchen spoons from Beehive Kitchenware!

Soup done, it was time for little things. Making the sauce for the fish dish, cooking the buttery leeks (another recipe from Movida Rustica), getting out all the plates for the different dishes. Here is Jon preparing his ceviche, with all our plates ready for action.

Then, after a brief pause for some sustenance, we tackled the trickiest part of the day: deboning a spatchcock for the ballotine. A ballotine is simply a fancy French word for a roll of deboned, stuffed meat. We watched this absolutely awesome and amazing video tutorial with Jacques Pepin, and it was actually really fun! Once deboned, I stuffed the spatchcock with a carrot poached in stock, chives, and bacon. Here I am wrapping it tightly in clingwrap, ready for poaching!

So! Into the fridge for the ballotine, and it was time to set the table and chill the wine. This photo shows our sashimi course, which I bought from the fantastic Claudios at the Sydney Fish Market.

I must apologise: from here on in, we were enjoying the meal so much that the photos are few and far between. We did snap a quick one of the vegetable course. Yummo vinagered carrots and the smooth and buttery leeks, and fresh radish.

I have to say that I am quite sad that by far the best course of the night - the Pan Seared Snapper with Corn Puree, Roasted Shallots, Chorizo and Basil - does not have any pictures. It looked and tasted absolutely amazing. I highly recommend you try it if you are looking for a fish dish to impress!

The spatchcock ballotine was absolutely delicious also - even though the preparation was a bit of a disaster. After feeling super proud about deboning and rolling so well, my cling-wrapped friend burst in the simmering water, and so poached without his covering. I thought that would be the end of the flavour, but we fished him out, and pan fried him to finish off the cooking. He was totally fine - and ended up looking very much like my inspiration photograph from Not Quite Nigella's dining experience at Astral restaurant.

After the ballotine came the delicious eye fillet with mash and artichokes, and then, after a brief sojourn to see the fireworks down the road, we came home to enjoy our granita and chocolate mousse in the New Year. And then, an epic washing up session later, there we were in 2011!

Well, it's about that time. Only a few hours left until we start a New Year. What are you doing to celebrate? J and I thought we would keep it quiet this year, and are cooking a fancy degustation dinner at home. I have been preparing food since yesterday, and I am excited to sit down to dine tonight! Remember me?! The one in the tissue paper dress? It feels like I have been gone for yonks, and, well, I have! 2 months! Ridiculous. I have been away with work and spending a bit of time with my family. You know when you just need to switch off for a while? Yeah.

So anyway, here we are at Christmas time. J and I put the tree up last Friday. Gifts are not yet wrapped, and not all are bought yet. It is warm and sunny and I want to go to the beach, but today I am working on getting my store back up and running. It's been too long!

I thought I would share some pictures of my life in the last few weeks - fresh berries (note mulberry stained hands!) from my aunt's orchard; cute new puppies; and our Christmas tree.

This little piece of patchwork has been sitting at my parent's house - in their "abandoned crafts" cupboard - since I was 10. I remember Mum teaching me how to cut the paper hexagons out of her old magazines, and cutting the fabrics from old dresses, shirts, baby blankets, and other scraps of fabric. I started when I was 6 - meaning that this patchwork is now 22 years old. About time it was completed, I think! I have a large pile of perfect hexagon-sized bits of fabric - and intend to make a quilt for our spare room bed.

Hopefully it doesn't take me another 22 years to finish it.

I miss Japan and want to go back.

New designs

They are a one-off - the gorgeous red and white stripe trim is one of my purchases from Japan, and I used it all up!

Baby Gocco Steps

A little while ago you may remember that I purchased a Print Gocco machine to make our engagement party invites. It didn't arrive in time, so I used other methods... and then I found myself with a lovely package of Gocco goodness with nothing to print. Until now!

With the party over, I took off to Brisbane with work, and then we decided to move house. So it was only yesterday that we took the plunge and set up the Gocco for his first trial run.
...Am I pleased? Yes - to get the initial testing out of the way. Did I have problems? Yes, with photocopies sticking to the master, and ink bleeding. But overall, I like our little design - even though it may look a bit "rustic" - and I think that there is vast room for improvement. I have read so many inspirational blog posts of savvy ladies tackling the Gocco for their wedding invites, and I really want to be one of them!

Firstly, I started with some new drawers from IKEA. I posted about them yonks ago here... well, I finally got them. In this state!

Hello everyone!

Between engagement parties, travelling to Brisbane with work, and moving house, I have been a bit absent. My apologies! We are now somewhat settled in our new home, with internet connected, bookshelves stacked, and towels folded in the linen cupboard.

So it is a good time to share with you a meal created in one of our engagement presents, a lovely Le Creuset casserole.

Before: vegetables and herbs ready to saute before adding meat, wine, and tomatoes. It was a Jamie Oliver recipe for a beef shin stew.

After three hours of simmering away in the oven, imagine the smell in the house! ... and when I lifted the lid:Delicious!

A bit of crafty goodness

A few weeks ago, I purchased a Print Gocco. A dying breed, yes, but I found it just too tempting when I started thinking of engagement invitations and wedding stationery.

So, I pulled out my Ebay hat and took the plunge. Jon and I designed a little invite to print based on the Mexican tradition of papel picado, or cut paper flags. Very sweet and quite detailed, these flags are used for many celebrations in Mexico, hung as bunting across the space.

However, it soon dawned on me that my precious Gocco parcel wasn't going to make it in time to learn the basics, test, print and send engagement invites. After some pacing up and down the living room and considering several mad alternatives (potato stamps, anyone?) I decided, last weekend, to pull out all the paper-crafty stops I could think of and make the papel picado the traditional way - but in miniature. Madness, but I am soooo pleased with the result.

The proposal

In the next few weeks I will be sharing with you some details of my engagement - the ring and plans for the party, and also some thoughts about decorations and ideas for my wedding (still a while off yet, but you can't help thinking about things).

So, before I barrage you all with the minutiae of ribbon widths and seasonal winter flowers, I thought I would share with you the day it all happened. The Proposal.

We spent the day on hired bikes, whizzing our way around Kyoto. By the time we got around to eating our picnic lunch, it was nearly three in the afternoon, so we stopped at 7-11 and bought a bottle of champagne to have with our food. The idea was to partake in the cherry blossom festivities by camping out under a tree and basically staying there til the evening.

After we had eaten, we were relaxing in the sun, enjoying the peaceful park and the falling cherry blossoms, and that's when Jon proposed. Lovely :)

This week, we will be home most nights so I have been flicking through some new recipes to try. Cookbooks, newspaper cuttings and handwritten gems from friends are all getting a glance, as are photocopies from magazines, vaguely scribbled notes from relatives houses, and websites. This week, we will be trying:
Cream tacos with rice and beans a Mexican staple involving long peppers, corn, and cream filled corn tortillas, with tomato rice and refried beans. Jon's nanna taught him the recipe.

Tuna steak with fresh salsa and lemon potatoes this much recommended recipe was lovingly typed by our friends in London, and was stuck to our fridge there for the whole 2 years we lived there - and we never tried it. I found the paper in my folder of random recipes and felt ashamed. So this week it will be attempted!

Chicken with roasted cherry tomato and basil sauce is photocopied from a little free cookbook that came with a magazine. My mum had it sitting on her kitchen bench at home. I will serve it with mash.
That will be the extent of my adventures into cooking this week. What inspired me was looking through the photos of all the amazing food we ate in Japan. So fresh, the flavours so delicate and everything presented with stunning attention to detail.

A bento lunch box for a train journey. Onigiri (rice balls), pickles, katsu (breaded items - pork, prawn, chicken), hardboiled egg, potato salad, orange, and spinach.

Kaiseki - a very posh traditional Japanese meal, like a degustation. This was dish 1 of 9.

First course of a typical evening meal at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Vegetables, beans, fresh baby squid.

Tempura soba. The broth was the highlight of these dishes - rich and flavoursome.

Ramen, one of the best things about Japan. This was our first time ordering and we overdid it with the added extras (leeks, greens, bamboo shoots)!

The freshest sushi in the world, at Tsukiji fish market at 6am.

The cakes are a whole different story. Perfection.

Cuteness overload

If there is one thing I was expecting in Japan that really didn't let me down, it was the cute factor. Everyone from kids to adults love the cute little characters that seem to represent everything from noodles to cars and toothpaste. The train has a cute little penguin, castles had little cute ninjas, towns famous for oranges had made a character out of the fruit.

As well as the characters, the obsession with all things mini and perfect seems to be quite prevalent too. Mini plastic cakes, tiny shinkansen trains, food served in miniature perfect forms - it all adds up to the cuteness factor.

My personal cute favourite, Rilakkuma the bear (above, eating a chocolate sundae), is a very popular character and seemed to be somehow present everywhere you looked. He was to be found as a soft toy, on pancakes, pencils, crockery, and umbrellas. He really has infiltrated every walk of Japanese life. But he was so cute... and hard to resist!

I'm back!
Japan was AMAZING. I could make a post every day for a year about all the different aspects of the country and I still couldn't cover it. It was just the most vibrant, crazy, traditional, polite, and beautiful place.

Also, I have some Big News. While we were in Kyoto Jon asked me to marry him. I am now engaged :) More about the engagement later, and I'm sure this blog will be something of a wedding planner eventually, as I share my DIY details with you - and I do plan to DIY a lot!
In the meantime, I thought I would share some moments from our trip.

First stop, Tokyo - what a city. We spent 7 days of pounding the pavements, eating some outstanding food, seeing crazy sights and buying some lovely souvenirs.

Top photo - a rainy day at Shibuya crossing. This is one of the busiest shopping districts of the world. Japan has a massive umbrella obsession - ladies have fancy ones to match their outfits, and no-one is seen without an umbrella. So when the neon, the rain, and lots of people combine, it makes for quite a sight.

Dinner one night at a tiny tiny bar in Shinjuku serving yakitori (food grilled on sticks). The menu was a challenge - pointing and some drawing skills came in handy. We now call this "The Bladerunner night" as it felt like we were in the movie. Tiny dingy alley, rain, smoke, neon. Great atmosphere.

The first sign of sakura - cherry blossom - in Naka Meguro, a suburb full of great quirky craft and design shops and little cafes.

We arrived at 8pm on the first night. Ditched our bags and practically ran out into the street of neon and excitement. This was the first photo I took of Tokyo. Pretty great first impression huh!

I thought I would share with you some of the great books, zines and resources I have used in the planning of our forthcoming trip to Japan. Some I have had for ages, and have been a long-time inspiration; others have been ordered recently through reading other blogs and talking to people. Yes, it might look a little excessive - but I believe part of the fun is in the planning, and I have really enjoyed poring over this wealth of information and discovering little known and secret places that will form part of our adventures.

1. Hokkaido Highway Blues by Will Ferguson
This book was given to Jon years ago by a good work friend of his. We have both read it several times. It is an account of a Canadian guy's journey from the very southernmost to the very northernmost points of Japan during the cherryblossom season - all done by hitchhiking. The tales of small, off-the-beaten-track towns, people who drive him all over the countryside, and the predicaments his gets himself into are both touching and hilarious. And at the same time, he reviews places really well. Several of his highlights have made their way into our trip.

2. Our Japan notebook/planner
This notebook is full of our scribblings of possible places we want to see, maps, train journeys, accommodation, and random bits of information.

3. Little Tokyo Shops zine by Angela of signsaysopen
This little zine was pointed out to me by the lovely RubyJo. It is a guide of hancrafted and local shops in Tokyo, specialising in fabrics, crafts and homewares, with the odd cafe thrown in for sustenance. I printed mine out so I can take it with me, and hope to find some of these treasures in Tokyo whilst I am there.

4. A Year In Japan by Kate Williamson
I recently bought this book after doing a search for interesting books about Japan. It is filled with the most gorgeous watercolour paintings of the minutiae of Japan, accompanied with little essays about her experiences whilst she lived there. It has convinced my to see several things, like the Saiho-ji moss garden in Kyoto, even though I need to send a written application to visit!

5. Mini Address Book
I bought this about 2 years ago, and covered it with some washi (Japanese paper) that I bought in Melbourne. The idea was to write down any interesting tid-bits that I found in newspapers, library books, and recommendations passed on from friends. Back then, all I knew was that one day I would go to Japan - at the time, I didn't have the savings or the opportunity. But now, I have been able to read over it and remember little restaurants and shops that I have noted, and will try to visit them.

6. Pocket World Atlas
This atlas has traveled the world with me, and I have used it for reference whilst planning this trip.

7. Tokyo Superguide
I just downloaded and printed this awesome guide this week. Jon found it here whilst searching for good Japan blogs. It is seriously great for the hardcore fashionista/designer/cool person in Tokyo - I was overwhelmed just reading about the breakdown of shopping areas and hidden gems. I also love the design of the booklet itself - it folds and staples into a proper book. Fab.

8. Rough Guide to Japan
I am not a huge fan of Lonely Planet. I have used the Rough Guide for China and for India and I found them really good. Nice maps, helpful and straightforward suggestions for itineraries, accommodation and eating, and lots of small and out of the way places covered too. It has been a constant reference and will go with us to help out!

It has been an age since I last posted my Wishlist Wednesday picks. I am heading off to Japan in a very short time now, and so I have also been on a very strict no-spending rule - except for things essential in Japan, like red duffle coats. So understandably I have amassed many many lovely things that I would like to buy but have not been allowed to! Here's four of them.

Today was the first time I have ever, in my 28 years, tried a pear. It was a bit squashy. But the flavour was nice. I think that I can now officially say that I Like Pears.

Please note the lovely plate from AtelierBB. The super-nice Brigitte added it as a gift when I ordered a set of dessert plates a little while ago. Also, for those keen-eyed readers, you will spot a bit of ric-rac braid on my chair - a sign of things to come?? WE SHALL SEE!

We finally got our beachy day yesterday. As anyone in Sydney will know, it was HOT yesterday. I got sunburnt. Naughty. But you know how going to the beach leaves you feeling refreshed, light, and quite health-ful and alive? That's what I most enjoyed. And so it was fitting that we had a super fresh, cool, and delicious dinner to complement our day.

Roast Beetroot, Button Squash and Rocket Salad

I roasted a fresh beetroot, diced, in a little bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. Added some button squash near the end. Then in a little pan I made some caramelised onions and then fried some chopped bacon. When everything was nicely refrigerated, I combined rocket, the beets and squash, the onion and bacon, some corn kernels, and a healthy measure of fresh dill with a little dressing of balsamic vinegar with a smidge of olive oil. Delicious!

This was just something I made up as I perused the fruit market produce. I used dill because I am a dillaholic, but chives, basil or other fresh leafy herbs would work too. Sweet potato would also be nice instead of the beet, and I was being good so didn't have cheese, though a fetta, haloumi or bocconcini would have been great.

I am a bit of a fan of yummy salads this summer. What's your favourite?

You know what, all I have wanted to do for the last few weekends is go to the beach. And for the last few weekends all it has done is rain like there is no tomorrow. So here I am, to live my dream through the internet. These are photos of the last time I was at the beach - at Walkerville, in South Gippsland, Victoria.

I may be light years behind everyone else, but I have just discovered the Book Depository. They have a massive range of books, ridiculously cheap prices and free postage to anywhere in the world. You can't get much better than that! Today my first order arrived:

A Year In Japan by Kate T Williamson. It is the most gorgeous book - a travelogue, with small handwritten essays and lovely watercolour paintings of the little details of Japan and everyday life there. It makes me so excited about my upcoming trip - and that reminds me, I need to stay away from websites like the Book Depository.

Whilst I was in Victoria on an unexpected holiday, it was my birthday. Seeing as no-one had planned for this momentous occasion being away from home and away from most modern ammenities, it was a lovely un-bothered and casual day, and one of the nicest I have had.

I received a beautiful bunch of flowers from the garden (and psst... check out the gorgeous old vase that belonged to my great grandmother).

Then my aunt made me a sponge cake. Being devoid of birthday candles, food colouring, or any decorative bits and bobs, we found some funny flower candles in a box of random bathroom smelly things, and I collected some little flowers from the garden to decorate the cake. It was filled with whipped cream and my aunt's homemade strawberry and loganberry jam.

Birthday dinner was a delicious Thai chicken curry that my aunt cooked, with fresh vegetables from her garden. So yummy, and such a memorable day.

Indeed you may ask. I apologise for my lengthy absence! I have been in South Gippsland, the very southern part of Victoria. It's where my Dad's side of the family are from. Just before Christmas, as some of you will know, my Dad had a stroke. He's on the mend now, but my family's plans of going down for a holiday were thrown into jeopardy when he was told he was not allowed to fly or drive. So I stepped in to share the driving with my Mum. I was so glad of the opportunity to go, spend some time with my parents, my aunt, and my brother, and really soak up the countryside.

You know you're in the country when you have to stop to let the cows across the road!

Handmade gifts: keeping the tradition going

Ever since I was a young girl, I have enjoyed giving my grandparents a handmade Christmas gift. Obviously, when I was young, the creativity stopped at nothing. Painted calendars, handtowels edged with fabric, lavender sachets, markers for the vegetable garden - I loved making them and my grandparents always loved receiving them.

As I have gotten older and busier in my very grown-up life I have let the handmade side slide a little in my gift-giving. Last year I made shortbread, which received rave reviews. But it was kind of cheating in the handmade stakes.

Anyway, this year, they have just purchased an outdoor setting for their backyard. So I found a nice melamine tray and some yummy biccies so they can enjoy their tea outside. But something was missing, and today I have had a brainwave of creativity! I am faaaairly confident they won't come spying and read this post, so here is the handmade component of this year's present: some coasters for their mugs.

The back is non-slip so they can sit on the tray without sliding around. I machine embroidered the teacups, and the middle has a little piece of wadding for heat protection.

I am pretty pleased with them! I hope they like them and enjoy an afternoon tea in the backyard.

When I was in Melbourne recently, I couldn't resist visiting one of my favourite shops: Wilkins and Kent. From the website, it looks just like a furniture shop, and indeed they do sell some gorgeous custom made furniture. But they also sell beautiful handcrafted and thoughtfully chosen things, including some lovely products from fellow Australian Etsy sellers, like A ble and Game and The Rabbit and the Duck. Kitchen, garden, decorative and functional, I am in love with most of their stock.

Living in a van

...on our holiday, our little van was a fun was to live in. A cooker, little fridge, sink, table and chairs and a bed. All you need, really (as long as you stop for a shower and toilet break).

It makes you realise how little you need to be comfortable. Two saucepans and a few plates, a box of dominoes and some fresh fruit and veg, and voila! Gourmet travelling.

One of the nicest things about coming home from our holiday was opening the door and seeing our Christmas tree quietly waiting for us. I love putting it up every year and I thought I would share with you some of the special decorations I have bought on my travels around the place.

This lovely lady is a handcrafted wooden piece from Nuremberg, Germany. When Jon found out about my love of Christmas decorations, he bought me this whilst he was there watching the World Cup in 2006.

Then we have this jolly Santa. He is from a huge Paperchase store on Oxford St in London.

This sweet star is all the way from Xian, China. I think it is the cheapest decoration I have ever bought at approximately 25c.

A few shots from our 10 day trip driving around the North Island of New Zealand. Such a fantastic trip - fishing, wineries, perfect lakes, fresh local produce, swimming, smelly craters and geysers, and of course fish and chips. It all went far too quickly.

So, in about 13 hours I am leaving for New Zealand. Hurrah! I can't wait to get on the plane, and then into the campervan, to drive around the North Island for 9 days.

So, whilst I am soaking up the sights, sounds and smells (yes, Rotorua) of the place, here is a sight and a story for you to keep you going until next Saturday!

It was my breakfast yesterday: a little dish of baked eggs with lots of leftovers. Ham, baby spinach, potato, shallots, mushroom, and mozzarella cheese all mixed together with fresh thyme, nutmeg, and salt and pepper, then baked in the oven for 10 minutes, and finished under the grill for another 5.

The terracotta dish is one of six traditional tapas dishes that I was given for Christmas last year, along with the wonderful 1080 Recipes, a classic Spanish cookbook. The dishes came from the most fabulous Spanish "deli" in Melbourne: Casa Iberica. They have the most amazing and delicious selection of Spanish and South American foods, from the best chorizo ever to the delicious flavoured Jamaica and Tamarindo drinks (a favourite at our house - and don't say Jamaica, say humaika). If you are in the vicinity, it is a must: 25 Johnston St, Fitzroy.

Some of you will know that I have been making bridesmaids and flowergirl dresses for my good friend's wedding for some time - indeed, it may explain my lack of blog posts during Blogtoberfest! However, today's the day of the wedding, the dresses are done, and I am eagerly awaiting seeing them in action!

I will post tomorrow with some pictures of the dresses, but for now, here is a little preview of the design. It was the first time I had a little play with some of the fabric.

Nerdy McNerd Strikes Again

In January this year, a good friend of mine from Germany gave me a jigsaw puzzle of a castle we had visited together. It is called Neuschwanstein, and was the inspiration for the famous Disney castle. It is quite glorious in real life, and comes with many myths and legends and an interesting history. The king, Ludwig the 2nd, decided to "renovate" an old crumbling castle on the site, and turned it into what it is today. Despite looking incredibly detailed and ornate, the castle is actually unfinished, as the king was suspiciously declared mentally insane during the construction, and soon after was found drowned in a lake.

Anyhow, lakes and kings aside, it has taken me til now to complete the 1500 piece puzzle, and along the way I took photos of my progress. And here's where the Nerd part comes in: I have taught myself to make a little video of the puzzle growing and growing until complete.

SUMMER HOLIDAY!

This is the campervan that we booked today to go on a week-long trip of the North Island of New Zealand, in December. Isn't it wonderful? Everything you could want in a vehicle, and best of all, we can stop anywhere we like and soak in the atmosphere. I'm especially looking forward to having picnic dinners, and seeing the scenery from the cabin as we drive along. We also plan to see the following:

Kitchen Town

Some of you will know that I am planning a trip to Japan next March. One of my top must-see places is Kappabashi - "Kitchen Town" in Tokyo. It is basically a street full of wonderful food-related shops. Lacquerware, noodle bowls, knives, linens, and all sorts of yummy goodness. One of the more quirky shops is a "fake food" shop, selling plastic meals for restaurants to display in their windows. I can't wait to buy some plastic sushi.

I have a confession

I am completely addicted to Modcloth.com. I only discovered it properly two weeks ago (living under a rock, I tell you) and when I first looked I thought "gee, this is great". I put a few things on my wishlist. Didn't really think about it again. Then, it popped up in another blog I was reading and I went and had another look. A whole slew of new dresses and necklaces and shoes! Updated every day! Since then, I have sneakily been checking up on them every day, just in case something wonderful appears. One Sunday back a few months ago, we were sitting at home doing a whole lot of nothing when a a lovely voice and a catchy tune caught our attention on Sunday Arts. It was a young lady called Megan Washington. We are big fans of Spontaneous Music Purchases - buying CDs having only heard one song, going to concerts for the same reason - and so we instantly googled, saw that she was performing at the Studio, and bought tickets within about 4 minutes of hearing that song (it was Chelsea, if you're interested).

I could carry on about how fantastic the night was for days, but it comes down to this: it was one of the best nights of live music I have ever been to. Her voice, the variety of musicians she had involved, the instruments, the wine and toblerone... it was near perfect.

She has since released an EP, How to Tame Lions, and the man has just bought us tickets to go and see her again at the Oxford Art Factory. I am soooo excited. It has been a long time since an artist has made me so enthralled.

Growth in the Garden Area

Tis September and for those of us living on the southern side of the world, time for planting, cleaning out cupboards, and hayfever - yes, it's Spring!

In a suitably perky mood last weekend, I visited my local nursery and stocked up on some loveliness to get me through the summer. I'm a bit lacking in the actual garden department but make up for it with some large pots and a rockery area.

Lavender is always a favourite. This particular kind above is Avonview.

The rockery area is an odd shape and seems to have been fashioned around our hot water system. Strange. I am going to try this little cutie, a Red Saxifraga. Apparently it loves rocks and shade. Good luck to it I say!

The windowbox area outside my kitchen window. I have thyme, capsicum and a magenta pigface. It was intended for my very exciting purchase of this fantastic pig, however, I think the plant will be bigger than the pig.

Lovely friendly sunny geranium. Reminds me of my grandma.

Last but not at all least, an ornamental kale. I have admired kale as a cut flower at my local florist for a while, but it always seems outrageously expensive. So I pounced when I saw it for sale as a plant! I love the colours in it.

Planning Japan

For a few years now, my yearning to have a holiday in Japan has been growing stronger and stronger. I have kept a little notebook with tidbits from newspapers and experiences friends have had, have taken books from the library, and generally get excited every time I watch Iron Chef. Well, I am pleased to tell you that my trip is actually going to happen, next March. We are going to go for a month, and are currently working out where we want to visit and what we want to do. Currently my list includes (and stay tuned as we update our itinerary)...

Having a Kaiseki-Ryori meal, a very posh Japanese degustation meal. Possibly in Kyoto.

Seeing the Sakura (Cherry Blossoms). We are planning to go at just the right time to catch them at their best.

Seeing the snow monkeys in a little village near Nagano, where they laze around in the hot spas.

This is only the tip of the iceberg! I look forward to sharing our planning with you and would love to hear of anyone's experiences or travel tips!

Books from my childhood

My post from a few days ago got me thinking about the drawings I did when I was young. I have always loved books, and several stick out in my memory from when I was young. I can still remember the illustrations and the words. They are the kind of books I would want my children to have.Window by Jeannie Baker is a picture book without words, showing the progression of the countryside through a window into a thriving city. It is a gorgeous evocative book, one of my favourites.The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base is another favourite. This whodunnit has the most intricate and thrilling illustrations and hidden puzzles and codes to solve as you try to work out who ate the feast! An absolute joy.

More Spaghetti, I Say! by Rita Golden Gelman and Jack Kerri still makes me laugh hysterically. It is a story of two monkeys, one with a major spaghetti eating problem. It is a rhyming book, and my mum used to read it with funny voices. We would read it over and over again. I still remember some of the lines:

"No, I can NOT! I can not come and play. Can't you see? I need more! More spaghetti, I say!"

When is a vacation not a vacation?

... You may have noticed that I have my store on vacation at the moment. It's for a number of reasons, including catching up on some wholesale orders, creating some new designs, and making some bridesmaids dresses for my friend. But the main reason is because my day job, which is working for a prominent Australian dance company, has hit fever pitch and for the next two or so weeks we will be trying to make a new show come to life. So you may get posts from me from dark theatres and hotel rooms, but I am still here!

So, the show I'm working on. It's from Bangarra Dance Theatre and it's called Fire. It is a 20th anniversary show, which means all of the best bits of past shows put together. It's manic and crazy and it will be an awesome show.

Swimming in Cake

Inspired by RubyJo and her memories of her Swimming Pool Cake for her 5th Birthday, I felt I should share my version of the cake with you.

When I was 5, I too had the swimming pool cake as my birthday cake, but as I was a Picky Young Lady, I didn't want jelly in the middle. Blue icing sufficed.

When I turned 25, I asked Mum to do the cake again, seeing it was such a hit the first time round. Now that I look closely, it was more of a desert island than a swimming pool!

For those that DID like jelly, we also had frog in a pond.

A Lazy Saturday Breakfast

As the sun comes up on a calm Saturday morning, and as the end of a frantic week is gratefully waved goodbye, I have but one thought in my head:

Bacon and Egg Pie.

And not only is it as easy as falling off a log, it tastes seriously good. This recipe makes 4 individuals:

3 rashers of bacon
4 eggs
1/2 a large onion, chopped
1 Tomato
6 sheets filo pastry
Butter, melted
70g tin of sweetcorn
4 tablespoons grated tasty cheese
Dash of milk
Nutmeg
Pepper
Salt

Chop the bacon roughly and fry in a pan until crispy. Place in a small mixing bowl. Fry the onions in the same pan, and add to bowl with corn. Brush each pastry sheet with butter, and cut into 3 pieces. Layer 4 pieces of pastry into each individual pie dish, arranging the edges roughly. Break the eggs into the bowl with bacon, onion and corn. Add a good shake of nutmeg, salt and pepper, a dash of milk, and most of the cheese. Stir well and divide into the 4 pie dishes (it should only be about half full - the egg will rise as it cooks). Top with thin slices of tomato, and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in a 200 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, or until egg is cooked and pastry is browned.

I have been frazzled this week. A very successful Christmas in July sale, a bit more work on the bridesmaids dresses, and a day job that has turned manic very quickly. I'm sorry for not posting!

To make up for it, I'm going to share my absolute favourite children's interiors label: Petit Collage. I absolutely adore every single item on their site. The complete killer is that they don't post to Australia. *Sniff* ...methinks I will have to fly to America to pick up some goodies... even though I as yet have no children. Tee hee!

A Rosy Farewell

I had my last day of my job yesterday. It was a day of mixed feelings, as I move on to an exciting new role, but leave behind some lovely people and a fun workplace. The ladies gave me a most breathtaking bunch of flowers.

The florist, Jodie McGregor, had thought to write what was included in my bouquet on the little card - what a great idea! Especially for flower nerds like me. The bunch had Cherry Brandy Roses, Cumquats (actual little mini oranges on branches! Divine!), LA Lilies, and Duke and Magnolia Leaves. Just lovely - the colours and shapes really worked.

I was very touched.

The 21st Annual Academy Awards

So, this weekend I attended my cousin's 21st birthday. It was a mask party, and it was fun. It got me thinking of my own 21st party (all those years ago!) and what a great night it was.

The theme was the Academy Awards: you had to come dressed as a movie character or actor. The response was AMAZING. Some of my friends I didn't even recognise. I thought I would share some of the characters with you... can you guess which one is me?

Last week, I chanced upon a lovely photograph of a room featuring one of these gorgeous paintings by Kelly Neidig. I love the use of line and colour to create a landscape, and the heavy brushstrokes are decadent. I particularly love the fields of crops, but the colours of the beach are close to my heart.

An Early Morning Visitor

This morning, I sat down at my sewing machine to make a dent in my sewing pile before I got online. No sooner had I opened the blinds when this little fellow joined me for about 20 minutes. I think he thought I had some friends of his - I was sewing up Pancho the Horse, who has remarkably similar colours!

You'll notice the photo I have sitting on my window sill. It is of my Mum, me, and my Grandma. It is one of my favourite photos - just the girls. Both my Mum and I have 2 brothers, so it is rare to see a family shot without a man! It would have been taken about 1983. I think it explains why I have such a love for denim overalls with red!

Sydney Night Lights

On Monday night we braved the crisp, cold, snappy Sydney winter weather to do a little walk around town and see a series of installations. Called the Smart Light Sydney Walk, there were 25 different stations with art involving light and colour. Obviously you can only do it at night and it really was a sight to behold. Here are some of the highlights:

The MCA lit up in different colours and patterns every 30 seconds

The Opera House close up - the colours shifted gradually, so you didn't notice orange turning to blue until orange was blue.

A wall of rainbow people

And on our walk home across the bridge, a stunning final colour show on the Opera House.

Moroccan Dinner Party

On Friday night we had friends around for dinner. Of course, being the culinary whizz that I am, I decided to make 3 dishes that I had never attempted before. Yes, I know this is a cardinal sin of dinner parties, and that you should always cook something that you know turns out well. Ok. But I saw these yummy Moroccan recipes, and I got a bit excited. So here's the menu:

Entree
Baby Spinach and Haloumi salad with Asparagus and Avocado

Main
Bisteeya (Moroccan Chicken and Almond Filo Pie)
Spiced Honey and Lemon Carrots with fresh herbs

Dessert
Golden Syrup Dumplings with Vanilla Bean Icecream

I admit, I cheated with the Golden Syrup Dumplings. They are an old family classic and sooo easy to make. But the other dishes were all new! And I was so pleased with how they turned out. But I think the Bisteeya was the highlight of the night. Chicken, red onions, coriander, ginger, garlic, saffron, cinnamon stick, chilli and stock all cooked slowly on the stove - and then baked in a filo casing with almonds, cinnamon and icing sugar between the layers. Delicious.

This week, I've gone with classic white, black and red. I absolutely adore this swimsuit, it took me half an hour to choose which plates to put on here, I'm in love with these cute bird notecards and I REALLY need a new pair of red shoes after ruining my pair of patent leather mary janes on the weekend (whilst dancing at The Presets, thanks for asking.)

My work is now stocked in a great new shop in Melbourne, Rude Health.
Owner Julia describes her emporium as being full of "polka dot fifties dresses, crocheted alien birds, silk high-waisted undies, Little Red Riding Hood capes, stripy one-piece pyjamas, paperboy woollen caps and felt lungs in jars. Every item is sweatshop-free and made in Australia."

Sounds great to me.

Juanita, Paloma, Rosita, Pancho and Pepito - some of my little horsey friends are off for sale in a lovely shop called Retrospections in Cammeray, Sydney. Along with some Supermarket Chic Bags, and Lord and Lady Bibs, they will be keeping company with some of the best... well, I almost want to say curation, of vintage homewares, books, beautiful accessories, baby items, and general loveliness that I have seen in quite a while.

The shop itself is also gorgeous. A real feast for the eyes.
